Ex-IPS Officer Jailed on Dhoni’s Plea: Madras High Court Hands Down 15-Day Sentence Over IPL Match-Fixing Allegations

Former Indian Cricket Team Captain MS Dhoni’s Plea: Retired IPS Officer Sentenced to 15 Days Jail

On Friday, the Madras High Court has sentenced retired IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar to 15 days of imprisonment regarding a petition filed by former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Additionally, a stay on the sentence for 30 days has been granted, allowing Kumar to appeal the decision.

This case is related to the IPL match-fixing incident in 2013. G. Sampath Kumar was a CID officer in Tamil Nadu during that time and led the initial investigation into the IPL betting case in 2013. He was accused of leaking information to bookies to save them, and this led to his removal from the case.

During the investigation, allegations against Dhoni were also brought up. Dhoni was accused of indulging in illegal activities by launching a mobile application for sports merchandise. As a result, Dhoni filed a case against Sampath Kumar for linking his name to the scandalous remarks. In this context, Sampath Kumar had submitted a written apology to Dhoni.

India Won Three ICC Trophies Under Dhoni’s Captaincy

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India achieved remarkable success, securing victories in three ICC tournaments. The triumphant moments include the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Dhoni stands as the only captain to lead India to triumph in all three prestigious ICC events.

Apart from international victories, Dhoni has also displayed his leadership prowess in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), he guided the team to clinch five IPL trophies, setting a record. This record is also shared with Rohit Sharma, who led the Mumbai Indians to victory in five IPL seasons.

In addition to his captaincy achievements, Dhoni, known for his adept wicketkeeping skills, holds the record for scoring the most runs (183*) by a wicketkeeper in a One Day International (ODI) match, showcasing his versatile contribution to the team.
