Former Captain-Coach Anshuman Gaekwad Battles Cancer: Kapil Dev Appeals for Help, Urges BCCI Support, Offers to Donate Pension
Former captain and coach Anshuman Gaekwad has been diagnosed with blood cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in London. Gaekwad is bravely fighting cancer on his own. The news of Gaekwad’s battle with blood cancer surfaced when his former teammate, Sandeep Patil, revealed it in a column for a Mumbai-based newspaper.
Legendary Kapil Dev has stepped forward to donate his pension to assist his former Indian teammate Anshuman Gaekwad with his treatment. Kapil’s decision came after Gaekwad did not receive any financial assistance from the BCCI.
No Assistance Yet from BCCI for Anshuman Gaekwad’s Treatment
Former Indian captain and coach Anshuman Gaekwad has been battling this illness for a year and is currently in London for treatment. Despite former cricketers bringing this matter to BCCI Treasurer Ashish Shelar, who promised to consider their requests, no assistance has been received from the BCCI so far.
Meanwhile, along with Kapil Dev, several of Gaekwad’s former teammates, including Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad, are exploring every possible avenue to raise funds for Gaekwad’s treatment.
Kapil Dev Offers Pension for Anshuman Gaekwad’s Treatment if Family Approves
Kapil Dev told Sportstar, “If the family approves, we are ready to contribute our pension amount to the fund.” The 1983 World Cup-winning captain expressed concern about the lack of a supportive ecosystem within the BCCI to assist former cricketers in need.

Kapil Dev further stated, “This is sad news. I am deeply saddened because I played with Anshu and can’t bear to see him in this condition. No one should have to go through this. I know the board will take care of him.” He also mentioned, “We are not pressuring anyone. Any help for Anshu is appreciated.”
“Anshu stood strong against the fast bowlers of his time. Now it’s our turn to stand by him in his tough times. I am confident that cricket fans will not disappoint me. They should pray for Anshuman’s speedy recovery.”
