Akshay Kumar’s ‘Mahakal Chalo’ Song Sparks Controversy Over Religious Depictions
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar’s latest devotional song, ‘Mahakal Chalo’, released ahead of Mahashivratri, has sparked controversy. The Ujjain Mahakal Temple priests have raised objections over specific scenes in the song, alleging that they disrespect Hindu traditions.
Ujjain Temple Priests Protest Against ‘Mahakal Chalo’
Mahesh Sharma, a priest at Ujjain’s Mahakal Temple, has strongly opposed some depictions in the video. While he appreciated the devotional theme, he criticized certain visuals, stating that they are inappropriate and misrepresent Ujjain’s religious traditions.
“Filmmakers should respect Sanatan Dharma and not distort its traditions. Such misrepresentations hurt religious sentiments,” said Pandit Mahesh Sharma, president of the All India Priest Federation.
Which Scenes in ‘Mahakal Chalo’ Are Facing Criticism?
- Akshay Kumar Touching the Shiva Linga – At the beginning of the song, Akshay Kumar is seen holding the Shiva Linga while performing the sacred Abhishek ritual.
- Applying Bhasma on the Shiva Linga – In another scene, Bhasma (sacred ash) is poured on the Shiva Linga, which only happens at Ujjain’s Mahakal Temple. The priest argues that depicting this ritual in a studio setting is inappropriate.
Religious Leaders Demand Ban on the Song
Pandit Mahesh Sharma emphasized that such misrepresentations harm Ujjain’s traditions and create religious misunderstandings. He has urged authorities to impose a ban on the song.
“Hindu traditions have been repeatedly misrepresented in films. Religious leaders should take a stand against such distortions to protect Sanatan Dharma,” he added.
Recurrent Controversies Around Hindu Depictions in Bollywood
The Bollywood industry has faced multiple religious controversies in the past. Many films and songs have been accused of misrepresenting Hindu customs. Priests and religious leaders insist that filmmakers should consult experts before showcasing sacred rituals.
Final Thoughts
While ‘Mahakal Chalo’ was intended as a devotional offering, its visual depictions have led to heated debates. As religious sentiments run high, it remains to be seen whether filmmakers will alter or remove the controversial scenes. The issue has once again ignited discussions about responsibility in representing religious traditions in Bollywood.
