Kangana Ranaut Denies Drug Addiction Claims: “I Never Said That, It Was Method Acting to Understand Alcoholics’ Mindset”

Amid increasing demands to halt the release of the film Emergency, Kangana Ranaut has found herself in the headlines again. A past statement from the actress has resurfaced, in which she had described herself as a drug addict. However, when recently questioned about this addiction, Ranaut denied making such a claim.

She stated unequivocally that she never said she was a drug addict. When presented with the same statement, she clarified that she had used drugs for method acting. Ranaut believes that instead of focusing on drug addiction, people should learn from her experience that despite receiving money at a young age, she did not become an item girl or a high-society prostitute.

Kangana Ranaut’s Past Statements on Drug Use Revisited

In an interview with Filmfare in October 2013, Kangana Ranaut had revealed that at the age of 17, she attended a rave party to see what it was like. Later, in a September 2020 interview with Hindustan Times, she mentioned that as soon as she ran away from home, she became a film star within a few years and then a drug addict.

These statements were referenced during her interview with Lallantop. However, Kangana has firmly denied any addiction to drugs, stating, “I must have never referred to myself as a drug addict.”

Kangana Ranaut Explains Past Statements on Drug Use

When informed that these statements were made by her, Kangana Ranaut explained, “What happens is, when you are in your family, you are in a very protective environment. Your family protects you. But when you become completely free, you start exploring the world.

We try to understand what’s going on. If you are free-spirited, you are drawn to places that are alarming, captivating, curious, dark, and beautiful. You get attracted to such places.”

In Gangster, I played an alcoholic, in that moment, I was bipolar schizophrenic; in Fashion, I was a cocaine addict. There was a phase where I was doing all these things like a method actor. When you are young, you don’t judge anyone.

Kangana Ranaut Reflects on Past Choices and Growth

Kangana Ranaut further elaborated, “We are open-minded; if someone in front of us is smoking or drinking tea, we ask to see what it is. Today, if you think about it, with who I am and my beliefs, could I achieve that success or breakthrough? No, because I no longer have that quality. The innocence that a 15-year-old has is no longer in me.

Would I go to a dark room where something wrong might happen now? No, I wouldn’t. Now I am much wiser; I know what a rave party is and I wouldn’t go there. But I used to go then, and that’s why I became Kangana Ranaut. I am not afraid.”

Kangana Ranaut Discusses Research for Fashion Role and Challenges Misconceptions

In her interview, Kangana Ranaut revealed that in the film Fashion, she played a character who was a drug addict and found on the streets. To understand and portray the mindset of this character, she experimented with drugs. However, she clarified that she did not experiment with drugs herself but conducted research with the help of some people.

Kangana further questioned, “Why are you focusing on the fact that I used drugs? Why not highlight that a 15-year-old girl left home alone, had money and luxury, but did not become an alcoholic, an item girl, or a high-society prostitute? She didn’t become what the world wanted her to be. Focus on that. Show the youth that even with money and without parents, a teenage girl did not go astray.”
