HMPV Virus from China Detected in India: First Case Reported in Bengaluru, 8-Month-Old Baby Infected with Flu-COVID-Like Symptoms
The first case of a virus resembling COVID-19 has been reported in India. This virus is identified as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). According to media reports, an 8-month-old baby in Bengaluru has tested positive for this virus.
The sample was tested at Baptist Hospital. However, the Karnataka Health Department clarified that they did not conduct the test in their laboratory. The report has come from a private hospital.
Patients infected with the virus exhibit symptoms similar to a common cold and COVID-19. The virus primarily affects young children, with the most significant impact seen in children under the age of two.
How HMPV Virus Spreads
The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) primarily spreads through coughing and sneezing. Additionally, the virus can easily transmit by touching or shaking hands with an infected person.
- Symptoms typically appear within 5 days of exposure.
- Experts state that while the virus is always present, it becomes more active in cold weather and spreads rapidly among people.
Precautionary Measures to Prevent HMPV Spread
- Wear a Mask: Always wear a mask before stepping out, as the virus spreads through cough and cold droplets.
- Avoid Handshakes: Refrain from shaking hands with infected individuals and ensure thorough handwashing after returning home.
- Avoid Self-Medication: Do not take any medications without consulting a doctor.
- Avoid Crowded Places: Stay away from crowded areas, as infections can spread quickly in such environments.
Taking these precautions can help minimize the risk of infection.
What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus with symptoms resembling those of a common cold. In most cases, it causes cough, runny nose, or a sore throat.
However, in young children and the elderly, HMPV infections can be more severe. The virus poses a significant risk to individuals with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to serious illness.
Is HMPV Similar to COVID-19?
HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) causes flu-like symptoms and typically affects the upper respiratory tract but can sometimes lead to lower respiratory tract infections. HMPV infections are more common during winter and early spring.
While HMPV and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19) belong to different viral families, they share notable similarities:
- Target the Respiratory System: Both primarily impact the respiratory system, causing mild to severe infections.
- Mode of Transmission: Both viruses spread through respiratory droplets released while talking, coughing, or sneezing.
- Similar Symptoms: Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.
- High-Risk Groups: Both affect vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Despite these similarities, HMPV is not as severe or widespread as COVID-19 and typically causes less severe health impacts.
