Dog Attack on 1.5-Year-Old Girl in Pandesara: Complex Surgery Saves Her Eye

A 1.5-year-old girl, Disha Rahul Maurya, was seriously injured by a dog near her home in the Pandesara area, suffering bites to her face and head. She was admitted to New Civil Hospital on Thursday, where immunoglobulin injections were administered to prevent infection, followed by surgery on Friday.

The baby suffered a canalicular tear, where the path between the eye and nose was ruptured due to the dog bite. The doctors inserted a stent and performed surgery to repair the tear. This case was similar to one that had come to the hospital six to eight months ago, where a child’s eye could not be saved due to a ruptured cornea, which remains a source of regret.

However, in this case, the doctors were able to save the girl’s eye. The surgery was performed with care to ensure that the stitches would not be noticeable as she grows. The procedure took an hour and a half, and 30 stitches were required. A stent was placed in the duct between the nose and eye, similar to how stents are placed during heart block surgeries.

The operation was delicate, as improper stitching could lead to the suture thread damaging the eye’s cornea, which could result in vision loss. Using a microscope, the team successfully completed the surgery with precision. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Tripti Solu, Professor, Ophthalmology Department, alongside Dr. Washvi and Dr. Kunjan Patel.

Surgery Performed to Ensure No Facial Scarring for the Baby Girl

The surgery was conducted in a way that the girl’s face would not have any visible scarring. Using a microscope, each suture and muscle was carefully examined to ensure the success of the operation. 

The procedure took an hour and a half, and special care was taken to prevent facial disfigurement due to the stitches. The team was particularly cautious about preserving the appearance of her face while performing the surgery. We are pleased that the girl’s eye was successfully saved.
