Thailand Extends Visa-Free Entry for Indian Travelers – 30-Day Stay Allowed
Thailand Extends Visa-Free Entry Policy for Indian Travelers
As part of an initiative to boost tourism, Thailand has extended its visa-free entry policy for Indian citizens indefinitely. Initially set to end on November 11, 2024, this program now allows Indian visitors to enjoy a 30-day stay without a visa.
Boost to Tourism with Simplified Entry Process
This visa-free policy simplifies entry for tourists, fostering an increase in tourism-related activities such as dining, travel, and local transportation. This boost has had a positive impact on Thailand’s economy, creating jobs and strengthening tourism-related services.
Visa-Free Entry Introduced for Indian Citizens Last Year
The visa-free entry program for Indian travelers began on November 10, 2023, as part of Thailand’s effort to stimulate its economy. Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke estimated that the policy would bring an additional 1.4 million visitors, generating around $1.5 billion in revenue.
Previous Visa-on-Arrival Policy for Indian Tourists
Previously, Indian travelers had access to a visa-on-arrival option, allowing them to stay in Thailand for up to 15 days. Thailand also introduced a similar visa-free entry for Chinese citizens in September, as Chinese tourists have historically formed a significant portion of Thailand’s tourism economy.
Tourism’s Contribution to Thailand’s GDP
Tourism accounts for approximately 20% of Thailand’s GDP, a sector significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, neighboring Sri Lanka has also implemented a temporary visa-free policy for select countries, including India and China, effective until March 31, 2024.
Rise in Indian International Travel
Data from the Indian government shows that the number of Indians traveling abroad increased from 14 million in 2011 to 27 million in 2019, before the pandemic temporarily stalled international travel. The count is projected to reach 21 million in 2022.
