Lightning Strikes During Live Football Match in Peru: Player Dies on Field, Multiple Players Including Referee Injured in Chilca Incident
During a live football match in Peru, a tragic incident occurred when lightning struck the field, leading to the death of a player. This unfortunate event took place in Chilca, Peru, on November 3, during a match between two domestic clubs, Juventud Bellavista and Familia Choca.
The sudden lightning strike from the sky caused a shocking accident, leaving fans and prominent figures in disbelief. Along with the player’s passing, the incident also injured several others, including the referee and some players.
Sudden Weather Change Halts Match but Fails to Prevent Tragedy
As the first half of the match was underway, lightning struck the field. At that point, Juventud Bellavista was leading with a score of 2-0. Suddenly, the weather took a turn, prompting the referee to blow the whistle, halting the match and instructing the players to leave the field.
Just as the players were exiting, lightning struck, fatally injuring 39-year-old player José Hugo de la Cruz Meza, who tragically lost his life. Along with him, five others, including the referee, were also knocked to the ground.
Similar Incidents Have Occurred Before
In this tragic incident, 40-year-old goalkeeper Juan Choca suffered severe burns, with visible burn marks on his body. Following the lightning strike, the injured players were quickly transported to the hospital for treatment.
Not the First Incident of a Footballer’s Death Due to Lightning Strike
This is not the first time a football player has lost their life due to a lightning strike. Earlier this year, in February, a similar tragedy occurred during a friendly match at Siliwangi Stadium in West Java, Indonesia. Lightning struck the field, fatally injuring 35-year-old player Septon Rahraja. He was taken to the hospital for treatment but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.
