New Dengue Strain Proves Deadly: From Mild Fever to Multi-Organ Failure, Negligence Can Lead to Death
Dengue Cases Surge in Monsoon
Typically, during monsoon, particularly in September, cases of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria increase. However, this year’s dengue pattern has become more aggressive, with significant changes in symptoms compared to the past three to four years. Starting from a mild fever, the infection now impacts the liver, kidneys, lungs, and brain. Doctors warn that negligence can lead to fatal outcomes.
Early Symptoms: Headaches and Body Aches – Dr. Mayank Thakkar
According to Dr. Mayank Thakkar, a critical care specialist from Rajkot, dengue usually starts with a mild fever, accompanied by headaches and body aches. This year, new symptoms have emerged where the fever lasts for 3 to 5 days, and despite taking regular medications like paracetamol, the fever does not subside quickly. Dr. Thakkar advises consulting a doctor early on for appropriate treatment and to avoid complications.
Liver, Kidney, and Lungs at Risk
Dr. Thakkar further explains that if left untreated, dengue can cause swelling in the liver, followed by a rapid decrease in platelet count. This can lead to low blood pressure and affect other organs like the kidneys, lungs, and brain. At this stage, the patient’s condition becomes critical, potentially leading to multi-organ failure.
Importance of Staying Hydrated
Dr. Thakkar emphasizes the need for increased fluid intake for up to 15 days. Staying hydrated can help reduce the severity of the infection. He also urges patients to remain in close contact with their doctors, follow medical advice, and get regular blood tests to monitor their condition.
Daytime Mosquito Bites: Dengue Precautions
Dengue is transmitted by mosquito bites, primarily during the daytime. Dr. Thakkar suggests avoiding standing water, as mosquitoes breed in clean, stagnant water. Using mosquito nets, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and avoiding half-pants are essential precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
No Specific Cure for Dengue
There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. The focus should be on increasing immunity and managing symptoms. Dr. Thakkar notes a rise in the mortality rate due to the more aggressive strain this year, making timely medical intervention critical to avoid complications like liver, kidney, and multi-organ failure.
Preventing Mosquito Breeding
- Eliminate standing water around the house.
- Clean pet water bowls regularly.
- Cover water tanks properly.
- Use kerosene or petrol in coolers and water tanks weekly.
- Empty and clean fridge trays daily.
How to Prevent Malaria
- Avoid stagnant water around the house.
- Use kerosene in water pits if water cannot be drained.
- Regularly change and clean water in coolers and containers to prevent mosquito larvae from breeding.
This preventive care can help control the spread of both dengue and malaria in affected regions.
