Government Order: Public Furniture to be Made from Fireproof Material

The Government of India has issued a directive mandating that all public furniture, including sofas and chairs, be made from fireproof materials. This decision has been made to ensure public safety and prevent loss of life in tragic fire-related incidents. 

The new directive will come into effect from October 1, 2024, though it was previously announced to be implemented starting October 7, 2023.

Fireproof Furniture Regulation to Apply to Dining Hall Chairs as Well

According to the new regulation, all types of furniture prepared for public places, including cinemas, dining halls, schools, colleges, curtains, chairs, and sofas, must be made from fireproof materials. The Bureau of Indian Standards has established the criteria for these materials. 

This rule extends to offices, malls, airports, restaurants, underground shopping complexes, museums, hospitals, and religious sites for worship. Educational institutions are also required to comply with this regulation. Additionally, the rule will apply to chairs used in dining halls.

Curtains Also Required to be Fireproof

The regulation stipulates that both the cushions of chairs and sofas must be upholstered with fireproof materials. Upholstery materials, used to make the cushions, must meet fireproof standards. Similarly, curtains installed in public spaces must also be fireproof. 

The announcement has been made by the Ministry of Textiles through a government gazette. Non-compliance with this rule will result in penalties under Section 11 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

Government to Enforce Fireproof Material Use Strictly from May 26, 2023

Since the gazette issued on May 26, 2023, mandated the use of fireproof materials, compliance has been limited. As a result, the government is expected to take stringent measures to ensure adherence to this regulation.

Quality Control Order to Apply to Furniture Material Manufacturers

The Quality Control Order will also apply to manufacturers of materials for chairs and sofas. However, this regulation does not extend to furniture used in homes. The rule will apply to all types of imported furniture, though manufacturers have been granted a relief period until March 2025. 

The government is taking these steps to enhance fire safety in public places, aiming to protect both the lives of the public and public property. BIS certification will also be mandatory for these products.
