Mohammad Shami played his last match for Team India during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Since then, he has been out of action due to injury. Now, Shami has shared a major update with fans regarding his comeback.
Mohammad Shami’s Injury and Recovery
The Indian fast bowler has been away from the field since the 2023 World Cup. He suffered a leg injury during the ODI World Cup in November 2023. Subsequently, in February 2024, he underwent successful surgery for a knee injury. Currently, Shami is working hard at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to make his return to the field. However, it is still unclear when he will rejoin Team India. During this time, Shami has given a significant statement about his comeback.

Shami is currently in Bengal. Recently, he was honored by the East Bengal Club in Kolkata. During this event, he spoke about his return, stating that he might play domestic cricket before rejoining Team India.
Shami to Play for Bengal in Domestic Season
Speaking at the ceremony, Shami said, “It is difficult to say when I will return. I am working very hard, but before I wear the Indian jersey again, you will see me in the Bengal jersey. I will come to play 2-3 matches for Bengal and return fully prepared.” This indicates that Shami may be seen playing for the Bengal team in the upcoming domestic season.
Injury Worsened During ODI World Cup
Talking about his injury, Shami said, “I never thought the injury would be this bad. My plan was to work on this injury after the T20 World Cup. But during the ODI World Cup, the injury became more serious, and I did not take the risk of playing with it. Even the doctors did not think it would become so severe and take so long to heal.” It is worth noting that Shami was the most successful bowler of the 2023 ODI World Cup, taking 24 wickets in 7 matches and helping Team India reach the final.
