Bangladeshi MP Found Dead in Kolkata Flat After 8 Days Missing; Police Suspect Pre-Planned Murder
Anwarul Azim Anar, a Bangladeshi MP missing for 8 days, was found dead in a Kolkata flat on Wednesday, May 22. Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed this information, citing Kolkata Police.
Kolkata Police stated that MP Anwarul’s body was found in a suspicious condition in the New Town area. Police have arrested three Bangladeshis in this case, suspecting it to be a pre-planned murder.
MP Anwarul Came to Kolkata for Treatment
According to news agency ANI, MP Anwarul arrived in Kolkata for treatment on May 12. He went missing the very next day. Azim’s phone had been switched off since May 13.
Subsequently, on May 17, his phone was briefly switched on in some areas of Bihar. The police said messages were sent to his family members from his phone, stating that he was heading to New Delhi.
Who Was Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar?
Anwarul Azim Anar was an MP from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party. He won elections from the Jhenidah-4 constituency in 2014, 2018, and 2024. Before Azim’s death, his family had met Sheikh Hasina seeking help. The Bangladeshi government had instructed diplomats in Delhi and Kolkata to investigate the MP’s whereabouts.
Search Begins at Friend’s House, Police Checking CCTV
According to police sources, Anwarul met his family friend Gopal Biswas in Kolkata around 7 PM on May 12. He left the next day around 1:41 PM, stating he was going to see a doctor.
He mentioned that he would return in the evening. Anwarul took a taxi from Bidhan Park in front of Kolkata Public School. In the evening, he sent a WhatsApp message to Gopal, informing him that he was going to Delhi. Due to this, his location could not be traced.
Kolkata Police have started searching Azim’s friend’s house and are examining CCTV footage from the residential complex. They are also trying to identify people who frequently visited that flat. The Bangladeshi Embassy is in constant contact with the police, and the Bangladeshi government has requested a report on the entire incident.
