NIA Conducts Raids in Jammu and Kashmir and Tamil Nadu: Crackdown on Terror Funding and Car Bomb Blast

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted operations against terrorist activities in both Jammu and Kashmir as well as Tamil Nadu. In Jammu and Kashmir, the NIA has been investigating cases related to terrorist funding associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami organization. They have been conducting searches at various locations, including in the districts of Badgam, Kulgam, and Gurjar Nagar, where terrorist activities have been reported. According to ANI reports, NIA officials have visited the residences of former Jamaat leaders Sheikh Gulam Hassan and another leader Syed Ahmed Reshi in Kulgam. These leaders are allegedly associated with the banned organization Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir, which was banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs in February 2019 due to allegations of terrorist funding.

In Tamil Nadu, the NIA has been investigating the bomb blasts that occurred in Coimbatore in 2022. These blasts, which involved the terrorist organization ISIS, resulted in searches being conducted at 27 locations across the state. NIA officials have been coordinating their efforts to combat terrorism by conducting simultaneous searches in Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Coimbatore.

The explosion took place on October 23, 2022, resulting in the death of the terrorist Mubeen and the arrest of 15 individuals.

On October 23, 2022, there was an explosion near the Sangameshwar Temple in Coimbatore. The owner of the car, Jamisha Mubeen, also died in the blast. The explosion occurred inside the car. Mubeen was 29 years old and worked as an engineer in business. He was influenced by the ideology of ISIS, although he was not fully trained, which prevented him from handling the explosives properly. In this case, a total of 15 individuals have been arrested so far.

According to the investigation agency’s statement, at the time of the blast, there were two LPG cylinders in Mubeen’s car, one of which exploded. If the second explosion had occurred, many houses around the temple would have been damaged.

In a shocking incident, blasts occurred at 5 locations in Coimbatore. CCTV footage revealed that three suspicious individuals, Riyaz, Firoz, and Nawaz, placed 2 cylinders and 3 drums in Mubeen’s car. They detonated the explosives in the car at around 11:30 AM. A fourth suspect, Mohammed Thalaka, had provided the car to Mubeen and his associate. All these individuals were residents of the G.M. Nagar area near Ukkadam in Coimbatore.

During the search, 75 kilograms of potassium nitrate, charcoal, and aluminum powder were found in Mubeen’s house. Additionally, a piece of paper was found with the names of five places in Coimbatore: the Police Commissionerate, Collectorate, Victoria Hall, Coimbatore Railway Station, and the racecourse.

In February 2023, the NIA conducted raids in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

During the investigation, the agency uncovered over 60 locations where such explosions had occurred in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. During this period, the NIA obtained information about individuals having affiliations with ISIS. These individuals were found to have been radicalized through videos promoting extremist ideologies.
