BCCI Media Rights Tender: Separate Digital & TV, New Broadcaster by Aug 19

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will issue a tender for BCCI media rights 2023-27 by 25th July. According to media reports, the BCCI and its consultant ‘Ernst & Young’ have informed the prospective broadcasters that the tender will be issued by today i.e. Tuesday (July 25).

The media rights sale may be announced on August 19 as the BCCI aims to announce the name of the official broadcaster by this date. These rights will be for matches played in India. The new broadcasters are expected to join the ODI series between India and Australia before the 2023 World Cup. This time also the media rights deal will be for five years (from 2023 to 2027).

Separate Media Rights for Tv and Digital

BCCI will sell separate media rights for TV and digital this time. Last time the Indian board sold the media rights to Disney Star for Rs 6138.10 crore. In which there was about 60.1 crore rupees per international match.

Possibility of E-auction

Broadcasters are yet to be informed about the auction process, but an e-auction is likely. Following BCCI’s blockbuster sale of Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights last year, it is believed that the sale will be conducted through online bidding.

The exact number of matches to be covered under the new deal is still under discussion. However, this deal is likely to involve around 100 bilateral matches. Last cycle had 103 matches. Compared to the previous cycle, the new cycle will have more T20Is and fewer ODIs as ODIs have reduced viewership, while the number of Test matches is likely to remain the same.

Summary

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to issue a tender for media rights for the period 2023-2027, with separate rights for TV and digital platforms. The tender is expected to be released by July 25, and the announcement of the new official broadcaster may happen on August 19. The deal will likely cover around 100 bilateral matches, with an emphasis on more T20Is and fewer ODIs. An e-auction is a possibility for the media rights sale, following the success of BCCI’s IPL media rights auction last year.
